Tips To Write Songs For The Rest of Your Life
We have different cups inside us -happiness cup -sadness cup -love cup -spiritual cup Your writing or creative expression probably heavily depends on one of these cups. As artists we fill our cup by living life, usually with an unconscious compass set towards the aim of filling one of these cups. What we focus on is what we get more of. I focused on love and sadness, that was my predisposition and it fueled my music and my songwriting. I would fill these cups and soon it was so full a new song would just flow out. It was only a problem when I got fed up with being a heartbroken sad person, and aware of the focus, addiction, and dependency I had on sadness and heartbreak in order to fuel my music. I wanted to change, I wanted to be happier, more consistent, and more stoic in life. I was young, married, and now had to grow up. I thought this meant giving up music, because all I new was songwriting from filling up the cups mentioned. I later discovered after a time of not writing, and instead learning how to fill some different cups in my life, (happiness cup, peace cup, spiritual cup, stoic cup, husband cup, family cup) I had filled a couple cups and a new song popped out that came from a different source than what I was used to. It couldn’t have been forced, it had to be natural, and I had to let go of songwriting for a time in order for the transition to take place. Then a couple more cups filled up, I had my first daughter, and gained a new cup titled Daddy Cup. Songs like Baby Blue and Collide came out of the filling of this cup. The main lesson I’m trying to share is this: I loved songwriting more than anything, it was the most healing thing for me, I felt the most alive when doing it. But I wasn’t doing it in a long lasting healthy way, so I let it go and then was blessed enough to find a new way. If you want your songwriting to be interesting and not grow stale, then you need to prioritize your personal growth and maturing FIRST, and keep the door open for expression. The songs will change and grow, you’ll be on a journey worth being on, rather than trying to continue to create more and more songs from the same place the last song came from. You don’t have to quit music in order to develop personally, they can go hand in hand, music and songwriting in the purest form is capturing the process of the outpouring of the cups you most often fill. So happy filling my fellow writers, from whatever cup you fill. Don’t worry about it, just live life and change for the better, music will happen when it is supposed to happen.
